A woman has been arrested by the policeafter she brutally killed her boyfriend by hitting him with an empty beer bottle on the forehead several times. 30-year-old Winnet turned violent, accusingher late boyfriend, Simon (33) of infidelity after the deceased had received a phone call. The infuriated Winner was eager to know the identity of the caller buther boyfriend failed to answer her. This resulted in the bottle assault. Jonathan blames Nigerians for challenges

From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday blamed the behaviour of some Nigerians and some of the vices they engage in on the current challenges facing the country, urging religious groups to play more critical role in moulding the character of their followers.The president stated this at the Mass put together by the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, to celebrate the 30th Episcopal ordination and celebration of the elevation of John Cardinal Onaiyekan to the status of Cardinal by Pope Benedict XV1.He called on Nigerians to eschew violence and embrace dialogue as a means of settling disputes. “The Church, the government and the political actors have the same responsibilities and we believe that the Church is atthe centre of society building. “Some of the challenges we face today are because of the character our people have. If the Church moulds the people especially starting from the children, Nigeria will be a better place. “For us, we believe that the church is at the centre of societal building, because, someof the challenges that we face today is because of the kind of character that our people have.If the church can mould characters properly, especially starting from childhood, Nigeriawill surely be a better place,” he said. Jonathan who was accompanied by his mother, some cabinet ministers and his aides, also noted that none of the two religions preaches violence, adding that their foundations were rooted in love and peaceful co-existence.“We all know that no religion preaches or encourages violence and hate. Both the two major religions preach loveand peaceful co-existence. This is of course their foundation.” The President appealed to Christians to continue to explore peaceful means of resolve conflicts. The recent retirement of 51 topofficers of the Nigerian Army has caused a raging controversy as those affected have indicated their reluctance to pull out of the service. The affected officers had written to the Army Council to appeal for service extension buttheir appeals were turned down by the council. Some of the affected officers had written to the council to appeal for extension in order to use the extra period to buildtheir own houses. But the Army Council turned down the requests for lack of strong reasons and on the grounds that granting them would be destructive to established norms in the army. Members of the council were of the view that granting an extension to departing officers of the service would encouragecorruption in the military whichwas said to be injurious to national development. There were fears that putting a retiring top officer, whose preoccupation is to build a house for retirement in a strategic formation could be counter-productive. The Army Council comprises the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, and others. The President, who is represented in the council by the Minister of Defence, is chairman of the council which sits once in every four months. The 51 retired officers include 12 majors-general, 24 brigadiers general and 15 colonels. When our correspondent contacted the Director of ArmyPublic Relations, Brig.-Gen Bola Koleosho, he said that he had no comment on the issue of the retirement. Koleosho had said during a press conference a fortnight ago that the army carried out the directive of the council in accordance with the rules and regulations of the service. Investigations showed that the reluctance of the retired officers to go resulted in the compulsory retirement of 18 ofthe top officers by the army. With their compulsory retirement, the affected officerscannot serve the nation as governors, senators, or members of the House of Representatives, or in any othercapacity. The army spokesman said during the press conference that the affected officers could write to the Army Council for arconsideration of the decision to retire them compulsorily.

Peter Welsh, 32, and Dwayne Doolan, 31, were in court this week to face robbery chargesafter making several unsuccessful attempts to break into Wrights Jewellers in Beaudesert, near Brisbane, but found themselves instead inside a Kentucky Fried Chicken,KFC franchise. The pair tried to break into the jewelry store three times.
